PIECES OF HER

Photography,  Art Direction,  Layout Design

Pieces of Her is a fashion magazine that reimagines the couture concept from the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands and turns it into a story of self-discovery. Through cut-paper garments and dramatic visuals, it follows a journey from feeling lost to developing a sense of identity. Each spread builds the story toward discovering one’s true self through cut-paper experimentation, taking my own twist on the Tim Burton film.

For this project, I focused on the movie Edward Scissorhands and reimagined the concept of couture in a new way. While the film’s aesthetics are dark, gothic, grunge, and whimsical, I wanted to explore couture beyond that.

At the beginning of the film, Edward is isolated and alone in his mansion, only beginning to embrace himself when he is welcomed into a loving community. People once feared his scissorhands, but he learns to accept them to and embrace its inner beauty to create beautiful works, especially cutting paper.

Based on the roots of Edward’s story, I focused on cut paper as the core element, not just as fashion but as a symbol of self-discovery and creative freedom. The paper becomes a way to experiment, express, and transform, reflecting the journey from fear and isolation to confidence and identity.

THE PROCESS

Experimenting with different layouts and poses helped me explore how to best tell the story. After many sketches, ending with a full spread of the model in her “full element” would be the most effective way to show her completely free and confident. Full spreads feel more expansive and empowering, giving the ending the impact it needed.

I also created my own typeface by tracing and cutting out letters of the alphabet, then crumpling them slightly to add texture when placed in the layouts of the magazine.

For the scissorhands, I used long, pointy nail gloves and created oversized scissors by cutting pieces of cardboard, painting them silver, and attaching them to the gloves. Wearing them was really fun and added the perfect touch to the project!
